Sign the Show and Waka

Scrolling through my Facebook post and I come across this awesome Sign Language Interpreter dancing to the music and getting in the grove and doing her thing – one of the many reasons why I love what I do #interpreting !!!

Holly Maniatty found recognition for rap while interpreting at a Killer Mike set festival and when Killer Mike saw her and noticed her, he was fascinated by her skills and talent that he jumped down from the stage to the raised platform and Maniatty colleague said he started dancing with them.  Also, said “that she had been initially employed by a company; however as an interpreter for a Marilyn Manson concert in Rochester after all her coworkers passed on the opportunity, eventually opening the door for her to be recruited by a company out of Portland, Maine that specialized in festival ASL interpreting.” Also, said “that by this point she was beginning to work with various musicians the likes of U2, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Saget, and eventually The Beastie Boys at Bonnaroo in 2009, which lead to her becoming a main-stay interpreter for the rap community.

Your Website is Your Business (Make it Count)

Today’s digital world means people’s first impression of your business likely comes from a screen. Your website is one of the biggest influencing factors that determine whether potential customers become clients or keep clicking. Read on for insights on how to make your site stand out and serve both you and your customers.

Content matters

No matter how visually-pleasing your website is, no amount of design can compensate for bad (or missing) content. The articles, blogs, videos, and images on your website should serve a purpose other than selling your services. Your customers want certain questions answered. Always list your hours of operation, contact information, and answers to commonly-asked-questions about your business. Providing your customers with relevant and useful content will keep their interest. You don’t have to have a billion dollar budget to optimize your presence online. Many small home-based businesses look much larger (and more professional) than they really are all because of their website. If you can’t afford to pay for web design services, you can still get your site up and running using GoDaddy’s drag and drop Website Builder. For less than $400 per year, you can create your own website with built-in security and mobile shopping capabilities. Your web presence doesn’t stop with your domain either. Utilize free social media tools such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram to grab user attention and direct them to your business. Social Media Today’s Andrew Hutchinson offers a number of great tips on how to write an effective tweet in this post. Take steps to ensure your branding — logo, color scheme, business name, etc. — remains the same across all platforms.

The Remodel Nightmare

How many of you dread remodeling?  OMG, never, in my mind did I think it was going to be so chaotic, draining and stressful!

So, last year with the rain my little homeshed office was damaged due to the rain and because I didn’t have the necessary funds to repair, of course it got worse!  So, this year wanting and not wanting I had no choice but to get the repairs and remodeling on the way before the winter starts.  As you know with all the ongoing catastrophic events that we’ve had going on around the world, I obviously don’t want to take a chance and have it come crumbling down on me 😦 that would NOT BE GOOD, right?!

As you can see the damage on the bottom, this little office was actually starting to tilt…OMG, right!!!  Don’t let the outdoors fool you, the inside is very, very nice and comfy, as you can see the old color was a bright orange!

So, we decided to get the bottom repaired, reinforced, as well as getting the roof done, changing the door (provide me with some more lighting and outdoor vision), but I also did even more, I had them change the insulation and sheetrock to make it more energy efficient and of course to SAVE SOME $$$ MULA!  Times are still hard, but without an office I can’t WORK! I also changed the inside color as well, I made it a more neutral color, so that it can match my white, gray, Paris, Shabby Chic decor 🙂   Having your own personal work space makes a huge difference, right?!  At least, for me it makes a big difference!

So, what do you think?  Do you think, it’s coming out good??? So, what I realized is that making repairs and maintenance doesn’t have to be expensive.

Originally, I was going to do (2 front windows and a glass door), but that was going to cost me about $400-$600 bucks just on material (And, it wasn’t even the nice expensive stuff)…So, we kept shopping around and my husband suggested that I do a wide french door, which it would still give me the view and lighting that I was looking for, so we started to shop for that and guess what? I found a door for under $350.00 on SALE at Lowes (+) I found a professional laborer who installed it for $250!!!

We also SAVED on the paint because we had a 5 gallon bucket that we had used for the inside of our house  years back 🙂

The sheetrock and insulation, we found it on SALE at Home Depot and for labor, I was able to SAVE some $$$ because my hubby and kids were able to install and handle this task using Youtube 😉 Yeup, it came in handy!

SHOP AROUND AND DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE AND TRUST ME, YOU WILL FIND WAYS TO SAVE ON YOUR PROJECTS!

the Great Escape

The beauty of life is learning to enjoy each and every moment that we are on this earth.  More importantly enjoying each and every moment you have with your family and friends.

We all deal with the day – to – day daily life struggles always feeling rushed, kids sports, work, bills, problems, but we all need to take a moment and GET AWAY!  A moment to enjoy life and the beauties mother nature has for us.

Many think that Getaways are expensive, but that’s NOT the case, at least NOT for me.  Why, How?

Well, I take advantage of my outings – for example when we have to take our kids to their sporting events, instead of sitting and waiting we take advantage of our day / weekend out and while the kids are prepping for their sport, we go out and explore and learn about the new cities, counties, states and / or countries that we maybe in.  So, how do I do it? Well, we travel a lot with our 13 year old son who’s an amateur boxer, we have to take him to his boxing events that sometimes are local, or out of town.  These events are all day events, meaning that we have to arrive very early and leave very late :).  Example: This past month my son was scheduled to fight in Sonoma and while he went through the routine of; Weigh ins, seeing the Doctor and waiting to see if his opponent showed up from the Central Valley, my husband, daughter and I decided to explore the beauties of Sonoma County (sometimes our other children opt out on participating, they rather wait and mingle with their friends, which is perfectly OK). So, we had a couple of choices, we could either sit and wait for hours till the Boxing Showtime started, or we could go explore beautiful Sonoma.  So, we decided to go and explore Sonoma AND it was all FREE, yes FREE! Take advantage and find FREE SPOTS;  Beach is Free, Lighthouse tour was Free, Walk along the Beach was Free, the View was Free 🙂  We always pack lunch, drinks, snacks, so we don’t have to spend a fortune on eating out!

We started to drive and decided to jump onto HWY 1 and followed it all the way through and this is were it took us – to the end of the Pacific Coast, isn’t it breath taking???

We went and visited Bodega Bay and stopped by some of the other Sonoma County Beaches and enjoyed our walks in some of the most beautiful beaches.  We decided to take a walk and enjoy the warm and soft sand while enjoying every moment watching and hearing the sound of the waves.  We sat for a while relaxing and enjoying the fresh, and cool ocean breeze and reminiscing with our daughter our visits to Santa Cruz, Petaluma, New York, Las Vegas, etc…mean while my husband relaxed and napped in the beautiful sandy beach!

Words can’t describe the beautiful moments we spent on those beautiful beaches and seeing the blue water and sunshine and nothing around just the beautiful Pacific Coast waters.

The Point Reyes Lighthouse on the Sonoma Coast is the place to visit it’s surrounded by “33,000 acres of coastal wilderness is a wild seashore that should be on your must-see list.”

Don’ts when contracting a Translator

To all my wonderful and potential clients,

Please keep this in mind when you are contracting a “Translator” for a Hearing, Medical assignment, Conference, meetings, etc.  Because I know how important and critical each venue can be, I want to make sure you contract ONLY but the BEST!

Tip #1: First and foremost DON’T search for a Translator

Because a translator deals with written material vs. an actual event.  The interpreter, however, deals with the “spoken word” that is the one conveying your message into another language and being “The Voice (TM)” and the one helping you “Bridge the Language Barrier in Communication.”

Tip #2. Second and foremost how to search for an Interpreter

You can always search on Google for an Interpreter, but it’s always better to ask someone with experience, someone who has used the services of that interpreter, someone who actually can tell you “Yes, I’ve used his / her services and he / she is great!”, or if you find the interpreter via Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc., ask that interpreter for his / her expertise and experience.

You can also find an interpreter via an Interpreting Agency, but that can go wrong very quick!  Why, because many agencies ONLY want to book the venue and they don’t take the time to actually evaluate the event and match the skills with the interpreter.  For example: Years back in early 2000 I was called to do a “Client / Attorney” meeting, at least that is what the Agency told me – they said “Oh, it’s no problem, it’s just Client / Attorney discussing a case”, I said “OK, I can handle that I have years of experience doing Client / Attorney meetings for friends and family”…Unbeknownst to me, it was NOT a Client / Attorney meeting it was a Deposition, well at that time I didn’t have ANY EXPERIENCE doing those types of assignments.  So, I told the attorneys that I did not feel comfortable moving forward with the assignment and their response was “Don’t worry, we are already running late, we can’t wait for another interpreter, we will proceed with you and if I see you are NOT doing a good job (one of the attorneys was bilingual) then we will STOP the Deposition”.  Although, I was VERY NERVOUS and hesitant I agreed to do it (per the attorneys suggestion). Thank goodness after all said and done, I was able to finish the assignment with 100% approval from all parties involved, but till this day I think I was (one of the lucky ones), NOT many interpreter would have been able to pull this off! Immediately, after completing my assignment the Attorney’s who contracted the agency called them right in front of everyone and fired their services and decided to contract me directly for all of their upcoming assignments.

Tip #3

When your searching for an Interpreter or Translator PRICING can be a big factor to many companies; however, some say and think that by paying more, you will get better services because the saying says: “You get what you paid for”, but that is NOT always the case.  Unfortunately, many companies prefer to use the services of an Interpreting Agency, as well as of a “Certified Interpreter” and think that by paying more for a “Certified” interpreter they will receive better services. Unfortunately, that is NOT ALWAYS the case.

When looking for an interpreter make sure to ask for:

  1. The interpreters qualifications and experience
  2. Provide details of your appointment, such as;
    1. If its a legal, is it a Deposition, Hearing, Trial, Mediation, etc…
    2. If its a personal injury case, immigration, civil case, probate, etc…
    3. The more information and basic details that you can provide the agency, or the interpreter the better service you will receive
  3. MORE IMPORTANTLY – Don’t assume that ALL interpreters are familiar with ALL TERMINOLOGY!  Just like a Doctor, he / she is ONLY familiar with medical terminology, but also they have their own specialization.  The same goes for Attorneys and Interpreters are NO DIFFERENT!
  4. Make sure to be specific of your needs and provide as much information and details of your appointment to better help the interpreter prepare for the assignment
